Running4Home Program

Do you run, walk, stroll, meander or just enjoy spending time outdoors at Memorial Park? Have you been considering adopting a new pet? Need a new running partner? Friends For Life is making it a whole lot easier to meet your lifetime match with the Running4Home Program.

Our mobile adoption van will be parked near the running trail on West Memorial Loop Drive (right before the tennis area) from 7am to 12pm on the second Saturday of each month.  We will have plenty of dogs available for you to meet and take on a run. Don't worry if you're not a marathon runner--some of our dogs prefer just a walk in the park.

And for those of you who prefer lap kitties instead of taking a lap with the dogs, we'll have plenty of adoptable felines in our air-conditioned mobile adoption van, too.

Click here for a map to Memorial Park in Houston.  The map below shows where the event will be once you're in the park.  Hope to see you there!

PAST EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS

Caring Cabaret

The Caring Cabaret fundraiser was held at the beautiful Hotel Granduca on Saturday, November 5, 2011. Guests enjoyed live entertainment performed by a very talented lineup of cabaret singers and piano players as well as a tribute to La Cage aux Folles. In addition to the live entertainment, guests were treated to a special exhibit and sale of art works by Kermit Eisenhut with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Friends For Life. The evening was a huge success, raising almost $12,000 for Friends For Life! Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the performers, artists and most importantly, the animals!

Houston Zombie Walk 2011

The Fourth Annual Houston Zombie Walk benefiting Friends For Life was a great success! Over 1,150 zombies showed up on October 22, 2011 for the 1.5 mile charity walk that raised $8,100 for Friends For Life. Thank you to everyone who showed up and made a donation. The money raised will help us in our mission to keep the undead animals undead! Check out our Houston Zombie Walk photo album on our Facebook page. There were some very creative zombies!

2010 Friends For Life Gala an unprecedented success!

The May13th 2010 Friends For Life Gala was a huge success! We were the top item in Shelby Hodge's culturemap.com column and send her warm thanks for that and share her column below!

The donations are still being tallied and some are still coming in. We are truly, truly grateful for the support and the generosity. What a vote for a No Kill future in Houston!

The charity gala season winds down but not before one whopping surprise!

By Shelby Hodge May 18th, 2010 at 12:18 PM

Supporters of Friends for Life, the no-kill animal shelter, are over the moon after last week's windfall gala that was packed with as much excitement as an NBA playoff. Who would win the George Rodrigue "Blue Dog" painting in the live auction and how much would the highest bidder pay? The sky was the limit.

Friends for Life board member Don Sanders, the Sanders, Morris, Harris vice chairman, and his wife Chris had underwritten all expenses of the evening. His buddy and fellow corporate board member David Sutherland-Yoest, president and CEO of Waste Services Inc., flew in from Canada on his private jet to support the cause near and dear to Sanders' heart.

With advertising exec and consultant Dick Smith as auctioneer, the bidding went fast and furious between Sanders and Sutherland-Yoest for the Rodrigue painting. (Sanders is a personal friend of the artist and has a number of Blue Dog works in his high-rise aerie.) The bidding opened at a surprising $20,000 and moved up to $30,000, then $50,000 and then $100,000! The 350 guests in the River Oaks Country Club ballroom were going wild. The figure kept climbing until Sutherland-Yoest made the winning bid of $180,000. Cheers and more cheers.

But then, the generous CEO stood up and announced that he was giving the painting to his dear friend Don Sanders and the ballroom crowd went absolutely wild.

But night's end, the dinner benefit had raised $660,000 net. It was a red letter day for dinner chairs Margaret Morris and her daughter, Lindsay Morris Mousoudakis, and honorary chair Milo Hamilton
